PNC RELEASES NEW STREET ALBUM ‘UNDER THE INFLUENCE’ ON MARCH 30TH

March 22, 2012  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments

One of New Zealand’s most formidable Hip Hop talents PNC is set to release his brand new street album Under The Influence on March 30th. PNC, along with Volume Magazine and clothing label Crooks & Castles will make the new street album available for free download from PNC’s official website www.pncmusic.co.nz

Under The Influence is not your run-of-the-mill Hip-Hop release. From an idea that spawned from an old school mix-tape concept, PNC and up and coming producer Matt Miller have included sample mash-ups on the album from pop chart topper’s Gotye, Justin Bieber and Adele, and chosen contributing artists like Midnight Youth’s Jeremy Redmore alongside more likely collaborators such as David Dallas, Pieter T, and Awa (Nesian Mystik).

A selection of singles and videos from Under The Influence have been leaked slowly for free over the past few months from PNC’s website including ‘Stranger Part 1 & 2’ – featuring a twisted mash-up sample from Gotye’s #1 single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ – and ‘Take It All’, sampling the Adele tune of the same name featuring local Hip Hop MCs Jordache, David Dallas, Louie Knuxx and Percieve.

Forthcoming singles ‘All Day’ featuring Pieter T and  ‘I’ll Be On It’ featuring Awa will be serviced to radio in the coming months and also be made available for purchase online.

Inspired by the current movement of artists such as Frank Oceans, J-Cole and David Dallas giving their albums away for free, PNC sees the merit in reaching a bigger audience this way. It was also a mix-tape, On the PNC Tip that first put PNC on the map locally, and it’s a format PNC enjoys working with.

Askew One – Smoke Signals – Exhibition

Askew One Smoke Signals

Showing in March 2012, Smoke Signals is Askew’s biggest solo exhibition yet. A comeback after 5 years of struggling to identify a true style of canvas painting that best represents himself and his experiences as an outdoor artist, but within a confined indoor space. Said to be triggered by a ‘stroke-like’ event he experienced in 2011 called Call Fleming Syndrome, this newly found style was discovered five months later out of frustration whilst painting on a particular canvas at an art residency program (Fountainhead Residency, Miami), the moment captured on video.

A perfect blend of bold illustrative line work influenced by comic-books, the graphic power of the letter and his cynical yet patriotic slogans, with a mature taste of abstraction and finishing, these new paintings deal with his identity in New Zealand context but more specifically from the perspective of someone that grew up through the 80s and 90s. He cites the Americanisation of local culture during that era and growing up inner city as informing his aesthetic and creative direction. Four generations Kiwi but a mixed bag of European descent, Askew’s Smoke Signals show discusses the cultural displacement of all the people living on this isolated island at the bottom of the Pacific ocean.

Opening: March 15th, 6:00pm / Viewing from March 16th
Weekdays 10:00am – 6:00pm / Weekends 10:00am – 4:00pm

Ker-ching

Here it is, the long awaited video for Take A Picture, from The Rose Tint.

The Take A Picture music video was overseen by local design wizards Special Problems. The Auckland based design house collaborated with seven different directors and animators, who each interpreted a different part of the song. Each director created their scene through a different medium (16mm film, VHS, Stop Motion, 3d Animation etc.) and none were allowed to know what each other was working on. The result was a series of beautiful, very different moments pieced together to make the video.
